Wood: Small defects

In my opinion, wood is one of the materials with the best value for money on a cutting boards. But, even an excellent quality one suffers from a significant defect. They need proper maintenance and some precaution with liquids to avoid deformation and the appearance of cracks.

Some are easier to clean than others, but without a doubt, you have to know very well how to take care of them in-depth, and they all have their trick.

Cleaning of plastic boards

A plastic cutting board has several benefits, including its price. The truth is that it is not uncommon for a cheap plastic cutting board to turn out very well, and on top of that, it is one of the most accessible boards to maintain and clean; in fact, many of them can be washed in the dishwasher, that’s right, without more significant effort.

The best thing is to wash it immediately after having cut meats in them; in this way, we will avoid any type of contamination in other foods. 

If you opt for the convenience of the dishwasher, it is best to use the delicate or economic settings and set a timer to remove the cutting board during the drying cycle; this will prevent it from warping. It is best to dry it with a dry cloth or natural.

Cleaning of wooden boards

Yes, a wooden cutting board can also be washed with a bit of soapy water and little else daily, but it is accurate that it needs a little more attention, at least weekly.

One trick is to have a mixture of 25% cleaning vinegar and 75% water in a spray bottle. Spray your board with this mixture and let it sit before cleaning as you usually would; the same goes for your plastic cutting board.

Bad smells? Hard to remove stains? Not even high-end boards can escape this. To dismiss them, make a thick paste of kosher salt and water and rub it on the board, let it rest overnight, and in the morning, remove it by rubbing with a firm sponge.

Oiling and sanding of wooden boards

It all depends on the type of wood, the environment and how your wooden cutting board is stored; yes, believe it or not, even small details influence how to properly care for your wooden board.

Kitchen professionals recommend oiling your wooden cutting board every week or two. However, the wooden board, like the plants, when they are thirsty, so to speak, they show it; you just have to be attentive to their appearance; they can often look more opaque.

In this case, there are less humid seasons of the year, where the board needs a hand in terms of hydrating the wood, which does not often happen, for example, in summer, when there is a lot of humidity. So that is not a strict and incorruptible rule; the summary would be: knowing how to listen to your wooden plank.

One way that also works to tell if your wooden cutting board needs hydration or not is to sprinkle a few drops of water on the board with your fingertips, as suggested.
