Misting indoor plants

It is often said that houseplants need misting. Is this the case for all plants? Why is misting beneficial? Should you mist in summer or winter? What water to spray? What are the other possibilities for increasing air humidity? Here are some answers for misting wisely.

Why mist the plants?

Many plants grown indoors have tropical origins and appreciate humid environments (hygrometry between 70% and 90%). However, the atmosphere in living rooms is often too dry. Just like drenching (the aerial parts of the plant are simply “soaked” in a bucket or basin), spraying water on the foliage temporarily increases the humidity around the plant: this is the reason why, in addition to watering, it is often advisable to mist the plant regularly.

Other benefits of misting: it limits the risk of the appearance of mites ( red spiders ) and can even dislodge those already installed on the plant; it allows a light dusting of the leaves, which is always welcome!

In what season is misting necessary?

Especially in winter, when the heating is on, the atmosphere in the apartments is too dry. The humidity can then fall to 55%, or even 50%, which is very insufficient for most plants, whose leaves can start to dry out at the ends, then turn yellow and fall off. In such a case, we are often tempted to water more, thinking that the plant is thirsty… Wrong! Doing so promotes the rotting of the roots, and the problem of too-dry air is not resolved: the plant is drowned by the foot while its aerial parts dry out. The excellent reflex: in winter, not too much watering and misting the foliage several times a week; Here is a recipe that gives good results with most plants.

Green Plant Misting – (CD)

Also, in summer, plants may need to be misted, as high temperatures promote evapotranspiration (plants lose more water through their leaves). So, you must also think about misting in hot and dry weather! It is true outdoors when your little protected ones have taken up their summer quarters on the balcony, on the terrace, or in the garden, but it is also true indoors, where the plants are less exposed to heat. But where they do not benefit from the nocturnal freshness or the morning dew.

Finally, certain epiphytic plants (including orchids, certain ferns, bromeliads, mosses, etc.) capture humidity from the ambient air and therefore need regular misting in all seasons.

Which plants to mist?

Most plants appreciate misting, except those with hairy or downy foliage ( saintpaulia, for example) and certain carnivorous plants with waxy leaves. Begonias and cyclamens are not very fond of having wet leaves; in anthuriums and orchids, be careful not to wet the flowers.

Remember to mist regularly:

  • Schefflera
  • Ficus
  • Croton
  • Azalea (except flowers)
  • Asparagus
  • Chlorophytum
  • Calathea
  • Philodendron
  • Yucca
  • Banana tree
  • Anthurium (except flowers)
  • Most indoor ferns (Asplenium, Nephrolepis
  • Bonsai (read: Maintenance of bonsai )
  • Bromeliads (Guzmania, Tillandsia , Vriesea, Billbergia, Neoregelia…)
  • Indoor citrus ( calamondin )
  • Orchids (avoid flowers)
  • Some exotic plants from “home” seedlings: avocado, lychee …

Misting: in practice

What water to use?

It is imperative not to use hard water: when it dries, it leaves whitish spots on the foliage, and, in the long term, the limestone obstructs the stomata of the leaves and hinders respiration. If the tap water in your area is “hard” (i.e., calcareous), the simplest and most economical way is to collect rainwater (or melted snow) if you have the possibility.

Failing that, buy demineralized water (the same one you may put in your steam iron) or even spring water with very little mineral content (a little trick to identify them on the shelves: these are those that can be used for the preparation of baby bottles, which is specified on the label).

If you have a lot of plants, commercial water use can quickly become expensive (and not very ecological): investing in a filter jug can be a good solution (mainly since this filtered water can also be used for watering and drinking water!).

To vaporize, you need a vaporizer.

There are many models of vaporizers (or sprayers, foggers, atomizers, so many words that designate, more or less, the same thing): a quick tour of the shelves of the corner garden center will convince you.

Choose the most straightforward and most manageable model, a small trigger sprayer with a capacity of 0.5 to 1L. Some models are more flexible and ergonomic than others: this criterion is essential if you have sensitive joints (and/or many plants to vape).

And for recycling enthusiasts, it is also possible to recover an empty spray bottle that contains a window-washing solution (to be rinsed very carefully!).

How often?

It all depends on the requirements of the plants, the atmosphere, the season, and the time you have! The most diligent will spray once a day or several times (!), while others will offer their plants a single weekly session. What counts in the end is the regularity of the effort.

Not too much need!

A damp atmosphere does not mean a soaked substrate or confined atmosphere: ventilation must be sufficient; otherwise, cryptogamic diseases ( powdery mildew, botrytis, etc.) may develop. Promote air circulation: do not squeeze the plants too close together, and ventilate the room (beware of drafts, however!).

Alternatives to misting

Some swear by misting; others find it too restrictive (difficult to spray only the plants: in practice, unless you install adequate protection, you often wet the floor, the walls, even the furniture) or not very durable over time (air humidification is only temporary).

In addition to misting, other solutions should be considered to provide your plants with good humidity:

  • Install an air humidifier in the room where the plants are located;
  • Arrange the pots on a shallow tray or tray lined with clay pebbles constantly bathed in water (you can also use pozzolan, which is harder to find but ensures better stability for the pots…because stones roll!);
  • If you have few plants, or for small plants, opt for growing in a humid terrarium (read: Plants for terrarium );
  • In desperation, install your plants in the most humid rooms of the house: kitchen, well-lit bathroom. A plant mister is a small spray bottle that sprays out water in particles that are so tiny that some remain in the air, increasing humidity.
