  • Why trust The Spruce Eats?

Whether you’re a beginner, an occasional cook, or a professional chef, there’s no denying the importance of having nonstick cookware in your kitchen. Not only are they key to making the perfect eggs, pancakes, and even simmered sauces and seared meats, but they’re also easier to clean and less likely to discolor than their stainless steel counterparts.

But with countless brands of nonstick cookware on the market, it’s hard to know which ones will likely take a lot of effort to clean up after a few uses —and which ones will stand the test of time. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best nonstick cookware sets to help you decide.

Rachael Ray Cucina Hard-Anodized Nonstick Cookware Set Review

Are you looking for a good pan set that won’t break the bank and performs well above its price? Choose this 12-piece set from Rachel Ray. The handles are covered in silicone in a variety of colors for a decorative touch and a functional purpose – since silicone doesn’t retain heat, you won’t need to grab potholders before grabbing one of these pots or pans – you’ll also get a slotted spoon and spatula from it the queasy color of kitchen utensils.

If you’re cooking a meal that needs to end up in the oven, this set can probably handle heat up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. These pans are relatively lightweight useful for people who don’t want to feel like they’re lifting weights while cooking dinner while still sturdy enough not to slip and slide on stovetops with a flat surface. Important Note: This cookware cannot be used with induction cooktops.

“A common problem with most nonstick cookware is that the coating peels off. We’ve used and washed the Rachael Ray regularly set for months, and it’s still as nonstick as ever.” – Stephanie Vermillion, Product Tester.

Anolon Advanced Hard-Anodized Nonstick 11-Piece Cookware Set Review

This 11-piece set, which includes saucepans, skillets, a sauté pan, and a stockpot, comes with a lifetime guarantee. All cookware, including lids, are oven-safe at temperatures up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Food won’t stick to these pans, which the manufacturer claims can hold up even on metal utensils. However, the best option to avoid scratches, in the long run, is to stick with wooden utensils. Even eggs cooked without the release of butter or oil without a problem.

“These anodized aluminum pans are triple-coated with a nonstick finish, which explains why our omelet came loose from the pan so easily.” – Donna Currie, product tester.

Calphalon Signature Hard Anodized Nonstick Cookware Review

Like many other selections on this list, this sturdy Calphalon nonstick pot set is complexly anodized, meaning it underwent a treatment process that left it highly durable. According to the manufacturer, metal, wood, nylon, or coated utensils are safe to use with this sturdy cookware. Although all cookware has extra-long stainless steel handles, some cooks find that the handles get hot to the touch, so you may need to use a potholder if you’re moving the pan from burner to burner.

The pans in this Calphalon are set to heat up quickly, distribute heat evenly across the pan surface, and retain heat well. The set includes two omelet pans, two saucepans, a sauté pan, and a pot, plus lids. Each of the pots and pans has a nice heft and weight, making them enjoyable to cook with.

“The pots and pans have a lifetime guarantee. It’s an investment, but we think the longevity makes this cookware worth buying.” – Donna Currie, product tester.

Caraway Cookware Set Review

Caraway’s collection is not only non-toxic and nonstick; it’s also one of the only ceramic pans that can withstand oven temperatures up to 650 degrees without worrying about cracking. This new direct-to-consumer brand works well and is available in several unique shades not often found in the kitchen: terracotta pink, sage, cream, navy, and dove. This 7-piece set includes everything you need to furnish or renovate your kitchen: a frying pan, a sauté pan, a saucepan, a dutch oven, and three lids. It also comes with a handy magnetic rack for storing pans and a canvas lid holder, easy storage options that other brands don’t usually consider.

Pots and pans are ceramic coated, allowing for a nonstick surface that is PTFE and PFOA free. Although this set is more expensive, reviewers love that these pans are easy to use and clean, and they feel a bit lighter than other pots and pans in your arsenal. While they are also dishwasher safe for easy cleanup, hand washing is recommended to increase the pan’s life.

The best nonstick pan buying guide

by Bernadette Machard de Gramont

Key considerations

Depending on your kitchen style and the size of your family, the number of pieces you need will vary. The most commonly used nonstick pan is probably a frying pan, so be sure to choose a set that has at least one or two is even better. Another essential pan is a pot, ideal for cooking rice or thicker sauces and stews and easy cleanup. More pieces will give you more versatility but require more space to store.

Cooktop Compatibility

Most nonstick cookware works well on gas, electric, and halogen stovetops; always check the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure. The most common material used to make nonstick cookware is aluminum, which is not suitable for induction on its own. If you have an induction cooktop, look for a stainless steel base that specifies that it is compatible for use with this type of cooktop.

heating capacity

Nonstick cookware is generally safe for low and medium temperatures, although some newer versions can withstand higher temperatures. Traditional PTFE coatings are generally safe to about 400 degrees, ceramic coatings can generally withstand higher temperatures over 500 degrees with some models, and hard-anodized cookware can be between 400 and 500 degrees, depending on the manufacturer. . If you often turn food on the stove and finish it in the oven, be sure to check what temperatures your cookware can withstand, so you won’t have to move from one pan to another to finish cooking.

Nonstick cookware is available at various prices, the least expensive being lightweight aluminum pots with a PTFE or ceramic coating. Since medium- and heavy-weight pans require more material to build, they will naturally be a bit more expensive. Keep in mind that nonstick cookware generally wears out faster than stainless steel, copper, or enameled cast iron parts. They will need to be replaced at some point.

Many manufacturers offer a limited warranty against defects in material, construction, or artistry. This warranty generally does not cover damage from thermal shock, misuse, nonstick deterioration, damage from metal or sharp utensils, or damage caused by abrasive cleaners and scouring pads. Be sure to double-check the warranty provided by the vendor to make sure it is to your liking.

Types of nonstick cookware

traditional nonstick

Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE, also known as Teflon, serves as the coating for traditional nonstick cookware. Vessels made with PTFE are easy to use and clean, but the liners wear down as you use them. The biggest concerns with PTFE primarily have to do with coating breakdown, which starts to occur at 450 degrees. At high temperatures, PTFE releases toxic fumes that cause respiratory health problems.

Commonly linked to PTFE, PFOA perfluorooctanoic acid has been used to manufacture traditional nonstick coatings, and there are some concerns about the long-term safety of these chemicals and their effects on the environment. Since 2015, regulations have required that all cookware sold in the US and Canada be free of PFOA, meaning it is no longer a significant component in the manufacture of nonstick cookware.

Ceramic nonstick cookware is coated with a material derived from silica, one of the components of beach sand. It is applied, either by dipping or spraying, to coat the inside surface of the pan and is then cured by high firing in an oven. While most PTFE coatings require at least three coatings, ceramic coatings can require as little as one coat, reducing the time and energy required to make these types of pans. Ceramic cookware glazes sold in the US and Europe are also subject to regulations that prohibit lead or cadmium, eliminating any concerns about leaching. The glass-like finish also poses no risk of emitting toxic fumes,

hard-anodized aluminum

While ceramic and PTFE coatings are coated over other metals to make a nonstick layer, hard-anodized aluminum has a nonstick surface that is essentially “baked in.” It’s made of electrochemically hardened soft aluminum to make it stronger than stainless steel and an oxidized topcoat that’s also nonstick and tougher than traditional nonstick coatings. The hard-anodized aluminum holds up well to high temperatures, resists scratches, and doesn’t react with acidic foods. Because the nonstick surface is part of the actual pan rather than bonded to the metal, it’s not prone to chipping or flaking.

This famous French cookware brand, sometimes known as Tefal, takes its name from the combination of Teflon and aluminum. It has a reputation for the high-quality, affordable nonstick cookware that can be used for years. T-Fal’s portfolio includes complete cookware sets, individual pans, and specialty pieces like woks and grill pans.

Calphalon invented hard-anodized aluminum cookware using a process adapted from the aerospace industry in the 1960s. This Ohio-based brand remains a leading producer of premium cookware, with mid-range prices that make it a popular and affordable brand for avid home cooks.

The GreenPan brand was created by two school friends from Belgium who wanted to find a non-toxic alternative to traditional nonstick cookware. Its patented coating is called Thermolon ™, a ceramic glaze that does not use PFOA in its manufacture and does not release toxic fumes at high temperatures.

fully coated

Pennsylvania-based cookware company All-Clad is loved by professional and home cooks worldwide. It’s a premium cookware brand known for its high-quality coated stainless steel lines, but it also offers stainless steel nonstick and hard-anodized nonstick options.

Some cookware sets also come with extras, such as nonstick spatulas, spoons, and other non-cookware items. If you’re setting up a new kitchen, these items are an excellent addition, but if you’re already well-stocked in the cookware department, look for a set that includes cookware only.

There are some universal rules for the nonstick cookware that will help you extend its life. Always use pans within the recommended heat range, as some nonstick coatings do not work well at higher temperatures. Ghee, butter, and cooking oil are recommended. Still, nonstick sprays will leave a sticky buildup that can be difficult to remove and will affect the pan’s nonstick properties. Test the finish of your cookware by avoiding sharp or metallic cookware, which can cause scratches and gouges that can lead to eventual chipping or peeling. If you notice the coating on your nonstick cookware starting to crack, it’s time to replace it. While some nonstick pans claim to be dishwasher safe, you’ll wear them out more if you wash them by hand. The nonstick surface allows food scraps to come off quickly; Washing your pots and pans with a non-abrasive scouring pad and mild dish soap is a simple and effective method of cleaning them.

  • Best Value: Tramontina Professional Nonstick Restaurant Fry Pan.

Are nonstick pans safe?

Health agencies have raised concerns about the compound PFOA, which was previously used to make Teflon. However, Teflon has been PFOA-free since 2013. Today’s nonstick and Teflon cookware is completely safe for normal home cooking, as long as temperatures do not exceed 570°F (300°C).

What is toxic in nonstick pans?

The slipperiness of non-stick pans is from fluorinated chemicals called PFAS and PFCs which are known to be highly toxic and persistent in both our bodies and the environment. When heated, multiple chemicals get released into the air.

Are all nonstick pans Teflon?

Teflon (Polytetrafluoroethylene)

Manufacturers come up with a plethora of different names for their non-stick coating but that’s mostly all marketing and it’s the same substance. Non-stick pans can either be Teflon or ceramic and 99% of non-stick pans are Teflon.
