What is a wall sander?

A wall sander is similar to a random orbit sander or orbital sander. This has a circular disc to which a sandpaper sheet adheres; when performing its turning movement, it roughens or polishes any wall or ceiling surface, a previous step before starting to paint.

They consist of an extendable arm to sand a wall or ceiling without using a ladder, which is why they are also called giraffe sanders.

What is a wall sander for?

The wall sander has many uses, although the best known is to prepare a wall before finishing it with paint.

The most common uses are:

  • Sand joints in plasterboard walls or ceilings. The walls formed by plasterboard sheets have joints, which have to be plastered and finished with paste; before going on to paint, the finishes must be sanded so that they are perfectly smooth.
  • Hotel sander. Removing the gotelé is one of the most common tasks carried out with a wall sander, for which they are instrumental. If you want to remove gotelé with an electric sander, you can do it with other types of sanders, but the wall sander is the most recommended.
  • Floor sander. Although there are specific sanders for sanding parquet floors, the giraffe sander can be used for minor repairs.
  • Wood polisher. Where they are instrumental are for polishing floors, making the final shine.

How do you use a wall sander?

Using a wall sander is not very complicated; it is enough to mount the arm and place suitable sandpaper on the sander plate, but so you can see how simple it is, I leave you with this illustrative video of how to sand walls:

Advantages of using a wall sander and not other sander models

There are many electric sanders, but each type of sander is designed for a task. While belt sanders are perfect for wood, they are ineffective for sanding walls.

Using a wall sander is the best idea when you have to remove drips, hide plasterboard joints or remove old paint because:

  • It is trained to do the job with ease and quality.
  • You can sand various materials such as cement, tile adhesive, screeds, paint coatings, drywall, and many more.
  • Due to its long handle and the heads on many wall sanders, you can sand an entire surface without having to stop to change the head because you can’t file a part or have to look for ladders because you can’t reach them.
  • Not only are they suitable for sanding, but they can also polish and smooth walls, floors, or ceilings more quickly and without having to change machines.
  • And most importantly, you carry out the work more comfortably because its design is conceived to sand walls without using ladders.

Which wall sander to choose?

Within the wall sanders, there is everything. You have cheap wall sanders, and you also have professional wall sander models.

In between, there is a great variety, with different powers, speeds, and accessories.

To find the model that best suits your needs, I recommend reviewing the following points:

  • Power: this characteristic will depend on whether the machine has more or less capacity to move the sandpaper on the surface. The higher the power, the more quality you will get from the sanding. It is even possible that if you buy a wall sander with a lot of energy, it has a system to regulate the speed according to the work you are going to do.
  • Disk size: If the disk is large, you can cover more space at once. However, if you want to reach all corners of the surface, buy one with a sander that allows you to do so. Sanders with circular and triangular discs will help you get a higher-quality finish.
  • Aspiration: some models can adapt a vacuum cleaner to the sander to avoid the dust thrown in the process. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable so if you don’t have problems with cleaning later, choose to buy a sander without a vacuum cleaner.
  • Weight and ergonomics: get a sander that is not so heavy and is easy to hold. Although these wall sanders have the advantage that you can reach higher places without having to keep your arms raised, consider that the weight can still affect your body.

Best Wall Sander Brands

One of the essential points to choose a sander and not make a mistake is to focus on the best brands, the most recognized.

Some of the best sanders have appeared in the comparison; the most professional and also the cheapest these are the ones that I consider to be the best and that you should consider

  • Makita wall sander
  • Makita is a Japanese company specializing in power tools. Its sanders are designed to offer the best performance at the level demanded by professionals.
  • If you are looking for a quality sander, it is one of the best options on the market.
  • Festool giraffe sander
  • Festool is a German tool manufacturer focused on power tools for professionals. Its negative point is the price, but the positive is its agencies’ excellent quality and durability; if you are a professional, I would consider Festool as a perfect option.
  • Einhell wall sander
  • Einhell is another German manufacturer of tools, in this case, more for DIY than for the professional. It offers fantastic value for money, its sanders are perfect, powerful and will get you out of trouble.

Where to buy wall sanders?

The best online platforms to buy a wall sander are:

  • Amazon Wall Sander
  • Amazon offers one of the largest selections of sanders on the web. You will find sanders from the best manufacturers, at the best prices. It is undoubtedly my preferred platform to buy; in addition, its customer service is fantastic.
  • Leroy Merlin wall sander
  • Leroy Merlin is one of the largest DIY platforms with a physical and online presence. Its biggest offers are in its online store, of which its Dexter wall sander stands out, which is its brand.
  • It doesn’t have as much variety and prices as reasonable as Amazon.
  • Bricomart Wall Sander
  • Britomart is another great DIY-type surface geared primarily toward construction professionals. Its offer is not excessive, but you can find the most representative brands.

Is a drywall sander worth it?

For small drywall repairs, a finishing sander can do a reasonable job. For large areas, particularly if involving more than one room, a drywall sander is faster, and most offer much better dust control.

What kind of sander is best for drywall?

Ideally, the best kind of sander to use for drywall is a drywall-specific dustless drywall sander like the Porter-Cable dustless drywall sander. This is one of the best drywall standards on the market that’s priced low enough for a DIY-er. It’s specially made to sand drywall and delivers professional-level results.

Can I use a random orbital sander for drywall?

Orbital sanders are great for small home improvement projects, including drywall. They can help cut your drywall finishing time in half compared to hand sanding. They also come with their risks. If you press too hard or sand unevenly, you can completely ruin your drywall job.

How to sand drywall for painting

Drywall sanding is one of the worst jobs in construction.

Not only is it messy and exhausting, but it’s also stressful because now you have to correct the previous mistakes.

Good sanding results are built on the foundation of good taping; the final sanding is your last chance to get the whole job right.

The paint job will reveal the truth: either you made it (all fasteners and seams look uniformly invisible), or any sanding and taping flaws will now be forever apparent.

It’s no wonder many homeowners choose to contract out drywall jobs. Dust is not just a health hazard; it can also cause falls and fires.

These tips will reduce the problem of dust when sanding drywall.

Take heart: if you are patient and pay attention to details, you can tackle this job! We’ll show you the sanding steps and finishing techniques the pros use to sand quickly with excellent results.

Drywall dust, like flour, is fine and will travel to other house areas.

To prepare your home for future work and reduce this dust, follow these steps:

  1. Lay down rags.
  2. Use plastic sheeting and tape to seal cold air return ducts and doors.
  3. Mount box fans in the windows (with exhaust) to ventilate the room.

Take the curtains off your windows and doors before you start work to avoid having to dust the drywall afterward.

Get the proper safety gear: a two-strap dust mask (change every half hour if you work in poorly ventilated areas) or a respirator (both types rated for drywall work), plus a hat or cap, glasses (keep in mind that glasses fog up) and comfortable clothing.

Don’t forget the psychological aspect of drywall sanding: the job is much faster and easier if someone lends a hand and you turn on your favorite music.

Eight steps to sand a plaster wall to paint

Captures dust at its source

If you’ve ever sanded drywall, you know what drywall dust can be! You can virtually eliminate the problem with a dust-free drywall sanding attachment for your handheld vacuum for much less than you think. These sanders with efficient suction systems we leave below can make your life easier.

Two extra tools you will need to use for drywall sanding.

For 80 percent of the job, you’ll use a hand sander or power delta sander on the lower portions of the wall and a pole sander on both the upper portions of the walls and all of the ceilings.

Both tools accept custom-sized disposable sandpaper (depending on the thickness of the surface or “grit”).

Use these tools to quickly smooth out high spots or even spots on all drywall seams, outside corners, and fastener strips.

Install work lights to illuminate the joints to highlight defects in the curb work.

Take time now to perfect your sanding; there will be no going back once you paint, and you must live with the results.

The best results with drywall sandpaper are using 150-grit paper.

The pores of drywall sandpaper may appear clogged during use. Still, the drywall dust becomes an additional abrasive to grind and polish the taped surface, producing a smoother finish. And extends the life of the sandpaper. However, for easier and faster sanding, you’ll still need to change sandpaper sheets frequently (in an average-sized room, you’ll need three or four sheets of sandpaper).

Apply even pressure when sanding drywall

Use a push-pull motion of even pressure to work with a hand sander for drywall joints and along narrow vertical nail/screw patterns.

Work the edges of the joints or strips with this push and pull motion or use a circular grinding motion to “smooth” the transition edge between the joint and the bare drywall.

To smooth out surface scratches, lightly press down on the hand sander and move it in a circular polishing motion.

Using a sander to sand plaster on the walls and ceilings

Also, use a push-and-pull motion with a pole sander.

Your arms might get “rubber,” but using a pole sander is faster and easier than working a hand sander from a ladder.

Tips for using the pole sander.

Pole sanders are more difficult to control; use a push-and-pull motion or a side-to-side sweeping motion.

Turn the handle to control a ball joint on the sanding head, which will change the motion of the head and allow the sander to change direction and rotate around the inside corners where the joints meet.

Turn the pole sander head wider to work through joints or narrower to sand along fastener strips.

If you work too close to inside corners, these tools can bump into adjacent walls, denting or gouging the finish. With its ball joint in the sander head, the pole sander is prone to tipping over and causing damage. Avoid scratching the drywall. Carefully sand the transition edge between the joints/seal strips and the bare drywall to avoid scratching the paper face of the drywall. Avoid scratching or gouging the surface of the drywall paper because those flaws may be visible after painting. The edges of all joints and closure strips should appear smooth and smooth after sanding.

The following sanders are recommended here; they are the best for drywall and ceilings. But you can find more in this section.

A problem when sanding a plaster wall to paint

Particular problems arise during this stage of drywall sanding, so be aware of three common problems when sanding: Hiding a protruding screw (or nail) by placing the fastener correctly below the drywall surface and then applying two layers of easily sandable putty.

Sand with a light touch to prepare the paint

Once you’ve done most of the sanding, switch fixtures and tools to finish the hard “finesse” areas, like those around electrical outlets, lights, and inside corners.

You can choose a hand sander like delta sanders for delicate work. You can also use sandpaper to sand by hand.

Use a sanding sponge.

Hand sanders work great on inside corners, but while you’re smoothing out one side, you can end up over-sanding the opposite side, cutting a deep groove that will require a touch-up of putty to fix. Instead, use a fine-grit, angled, wet/dry sanding sponge to work each side of the inside corners. Firmly grasp the sanding sponge at an angle, apply steady pressure and move it up and down inside the corners to get a straight, well-defined edge. Then, move the sponge in a circular or push-pull motion to smooth out the transition edge of the finished corner joint.

Preparing to paint a plaster wall

In the past, after sanding my drywall, I would prepare to paint by sweeping the surfaces or vacuuming them to remove all dust. Wrong, say many experts. They advise a minimum cleaning of walls and ceilings.

Removes accumulated dust from inside corners and dust balls from wide taped seams and fastening strips. Otherwise, you will leave an even layer of dust over the entire surface of the drywall, especially along the transition edges of the seams and fastener strips.

The powder will adhere to the paint and provide a filler to mask scratches, pits, and scuffs on the paper’s surface. Dust, your opponent during the early stages of drywall work, ironically becomes really at the end to improve your paint job and help get the great results you’ve worked for.

What kind of sander do you use for drywall?

As with most remodeling tasks, having the right tools is key to a top-notch job. For drywall sanding, you’ll need a hand sander, a package of 150-grit drywall sanding paper precut to fit the sander, a sanding sponge for corners, and detail sanding.

What is the easiest way to sand drywall?

Apply a push-pull motion when using a hand sander or pole sander, applying even pressure inside the seams and along nail and screw patterns. Use semi-coarse sandpaper of 100 of 120 grit to sand down the rough areas or dried compound, then continue with 150 grit to smooth the areas further.

Is wet sanding drywall better?

Wet-sanding drywall compound is a slower process than traditional sanding. If you’re interested in speed, you’ll want to dry-sand. Nor does wet-sanding produce a perfectly smooth surface. Because you are using a flexible finished wall spongeay exhibit gentle waves.
