9 Best Kamado Grills Buying Guide and Reviews 2022

Kamado grills have a tradition that goes back thousands of years, but the Kamado grill as we know it today is an egg-shaped insulated grill with a hinged lid that provides plenty of space above and below the grills. For airflow.

The best Kamado grills are still ceramic, although some are steel or even cast iron. Their thick walls provide them with excellent insulation, high efficiency, and resistance to very high and shallow temperatures, making them perfect for grilling and smoking.

Understanding how kamado works can be challenging at first, but this versatile grill can produce exceptional results as you learn to control the temperature. It might just become your new favorite cooking method.

These are the best kamado grills on the market.

1. Best Overall: Kamado Joe Classic Joe III Charcoal Grill

The folks at Kamado Joe certainly aren’t resting on their laurels. While the previous Classic Kamado Joe was a high-quality grill that scored well in our tests, the Classic Joe III has reached another level of cooking perfection with the patented SlōRoller insert that creates a cyclonic airflow that controls both the heat like smoke for slow, low cooking, all the way up to 500 degrees.

When it’s time for higher temperatures, up to 750 degrees, the SlōRoller can be swapped out for heat deflector plates to perfectly sear a steak or amazing restaurant-style pizza.

The built-in thermometer makes it easy to monitor internal temperature, while the top vent makes it easy to monitor smoke and heat. The heavy-duty rolling cart makes it easy to move to the perfect grilling spot, and the ashtray makes cleanup a breeze when cooking.

Like the Classic Joe II, this one has the three-tier Divide and Conquer cooking system that allows for layered cooking, providing more cooking space closer to or farther from the coals, as well as different cooking surfaces for different types of cuisine. Types of food. The system’s total cooking space is 510 square inches, making it ideal for both family dinners and parties.

Another benefit of Kamado Joe grills is the variety of accessories available to customize the cooking experience further.

2. Most Popular: Kamado Joe Classic II Charcoal Grill

It’s hard to find fault with this classic 18-inch grill, a simple user favorite. This grill is a pleasure to use, from the stainless steel components to the lid that opens with two fingers and stays in any position to the unique ash drawer that cleans up in no time.

It has a total of 406 square inches of cooking surface and can keep from 225 to 750 degrees heat, so you can use it for slow cooking or heating a fire to cook pizza quickly.

The built-in thermometer lets you check the temperature quickly, and the top vent is designed to stay exactly where you set it to keep you as warm as you need. Side shelves give you space for tools and dishes, while the four-wheel stand lets you position the grill perfectly.

The Divide and Conquer cooking system lets you cook different foods at different temperatures, and the included rack gripping tool makes it easy to move or rearrange the racks just the way you like. You’ll get a multipurpose stainless steel grate, two half grates, and two half ceramic heat deflectors with this grill, so all you need is charcoal and some grilling food.

3. Best With a Smoker: Char-Griller Akorn Kamado Charcoal Grill

This grill offers 314 square inches of primary cooking space on cast iron cooking grates, plus an additional 133 inches on the top grate, so you’ll have plenty of room to cook, smoke, and more.

It can maintain temperatures from 200 to 700 degrees for everything from low and slow to very hot. The damper has numbers, so you can easily remember which damper position you prefer.

This grill is made of triple-walled 22-gauge steel instead of ceramic and has a powder-coated exterior and porcelain-coated interior. Two metal shelves give you space for sauces, condiments, and spices and fold down out of the way when not in use.

When it’s time to clean up, the ashtray makes it easy.

This includes a cart made of tubular steel with 8-inch rubber wheels to help you position it perfectly. While it still weighs 100 pounds, it is lighter than ceramic grills of the same size.

4. Best Budget: Char-Griller Akorn Jr. Kamado Kooker Charcoal Grill

This grill will appeal to people on a budget and people who don’t want to commit to a big, heavy grill. At just 37 pounds, it’s small enough to be portable.

Side handles make moving easy, while short, sturdy legs keep it stable on uneven surfaces. The 153-square-inch main cooking space is enough for a family meal on the 14-inch diameter cast iron cooking grate.

Although small, it has many of the features of a larger grill, including a triple-wall 22-gauge grill, steel construction, and the ability to maintain temperatures from 200 to 700 degrees. The interior is enamel coated, while the exterior is powder-coated, and the ashtray makes cleaning easy.

5. Best With Table: Vision Grills Kamado Pro Ceramic Charcoal Grill with Grill Cover

Most Kamado grills come with brackets, but this one takes design to another level with an acacia wood tabletop that supports and surrounds the grill, making it look like a quality piece of furniture for your deck or backyard.

Tools, dishes, and condiments next to the grill, with even more storage space on the shelf below. The table is made of slats, so rainwater runs off efficiently, and it has wheels that make it easy to position it in the perfect place.

This grill has a two-tier cooking grate that offers 214 square inches of primary cooking space. Duluth Forge also offers larger grills, sold without a table.

6. Best Under $1,000: Broil King Keg Kamado Charcoal Grill

Shaped more like a barrel than an egg, the double-walled steel body keeps this grill insulated while keeping the total weight down to 126 pounds, making it easier to move than ceramic grills of the same size. It has a durable powder-coated finish that will resist rust and stay attractive for years to come.

The 280-square-inch primary cooking grate is made of cast iron, while the 200-square-inch secondary area has a chrome-plated steel grate that rotates easily when you need to get to the food on the bottom. Side shelves allow you to keep tools and spices nearby, and they’re removable if you don’t need them. The large wheels, steel frame, and sturdy handle make it easy to move when you need to.

7. Best Splurge: Kamado Joe Big Joe II Charcoal Grill

When you’re ready for a large kamado grill and have room to store it, this 24-inch grill is one to keep a close eye on. Highly rated by users, it has 452 square inches of cooking space so that you can feed a crowd with ease.

The cooking grates are made of commercial-grade 304 stainless steel that won’t rust or corrode, so cleanup is easy. It includes the Divide and Conquer cooking system, so you can cook at different levels, which means you cook at different temperatures.

The airlift hinge allows you to lift the heavy lid with just two fingers, and it will stay in position when you let go. A great clamp enables you to grip the grates for safe removal or repositioning during cooking, and the patented Slide-Ash Drawer makes it easy to remove ash when cooking is done.

An ash tool is included for a thorough cleaning when needed. This grill weighs 250 pounds, so even though it has a cart on wheels, you’re unlikely to move it very far once you’ve decided on the perfect cooking space.

8. Best Egg: Big Green Egg Large Kamado Grill

The Big Green Egg has many loyal fans, many sizes to choose from, and a wide range of accessories that make this grill a worthy contender when shopping for a kamado. Additionally, the company liberally uses hollow turns of phrase when naming its… EGGcessories.

The Big Big Green Egg is the most popular size and can be used with baking, grilling, and smoking egg accessories. It’s big enough for families but not so big that it requires a team of volunteers to move it around.

The rack is 18.25 inches in diameter and has 262 square inches of cooking space, enough to cook a 20-pound turkey, eight steaks, or 12 hamburgers.

For large crowds, six chickens or seven ribs can be cooked vertically. This weighs 162 pounds, so it’s not lightweight, but it’s easier to roll into place when placed in a “nest” with wheels sold separately.

9. Best Portable: Vision Grills Icon 101 Hybrid Electric Kamado Grill

Whether you live in a small home and don’t have a lot of grilling space or can’t imagine going anywhere without your kamado grill, this tabletop model is compact, portable, and versatile, making it an ideal choice.

Ideal for tailgating, camping, or condo. The ceramic grill features two-tier stainless steel grates for 214 square inches of cooking space, as well as a labeled cast-iron top vent with color-coded heat zone controls to help you achieve optimal results.

Arguably the best part about this grill, though, is that it’s a hybrid model that can run on charcoal or electricity. You can usually use it with lump charcoal, but it also comes with a Quickchange kit that allows you to light it on an electric lava stone grill.

What to Look for When Buying a Kamado Grill

Material

Ceramic is the preferred material for a kamado grill because it is durable and provides excellent heat retention at high and low temperatures.

The thicker the ceramic, the better it will perform at holding temperatures, and the heavier it is, the main drawback of ceramic. While highly resistant to heat, cold, and other outdoor elements, if you were to drop a ceramic grill because, you know, it’s heavy, it could easily break on impact.

Many competitive grills have developed innovative methods of transporting their ceramic grills, but others opt for the lighter double- or triple-walled steel models. Steel is more delicate and less expensive than ceramic, but it won’t last nearly as long because it is more susceptible to elements and corrosion.

Size

Due to their vertical design, freestanding kamado grills do not take up a lot of space, but they are somewhat limited in the cooking surface area. The listed size of a kamado grill refers to the diameter of the grill grate. The overall diameter of the grill will be six to 10 inches plus, not counting supports, handles, or tabletop accessories.

To have enough room to grill burgers for a crowd or smoke several whole birds, you’ll want a grill that’s at least 18 or 24 inches, which gets into “large” or “extra-large” territory, but remember, the bigger they are, the more They get heavy, so keep that in mind if you move frequently or plan to travel with your kamado grill.

By comparison, it measures 22 inches and weighs 32 pounds, the 24-inch Kamado Joe weighs 371 pounds, and the 24-inch Big Green Egg weighs 219 pounds.

Bells and Whistles

The beauty of a kamado grill lies in its ability to maintain temperature. In its most basic form, the kamado grill has an egg-shaped body with a hinged lid, grill grates, and top and bottom vents.

Most of them have a daisy and a vent on the top to allow the user to control the airflow to maintain or regulate the temperature. Most models also have a built-in or removable thermometer in the lid.

We do not recommend gimmicky features such as built-in electronics or motorized elements as they are unlikely to work during the grill’s life. Instead,

Accessories

It would help if you got started, and others will make cooking on a kamado grill much easier and more enjoyable, e.g., table, grill grate expander, ceramic heat deflector, etc.

Some brands include everything you need to get started, while others sell a primary grill body and let you choose your preferred accessories for an additional cost. The cost of supplements can also add up quickly, so when shopping, pay close attention to what is included with the grill you want to buy.

Warranty

A kamado grill, especially a large ceramic one, is an investment, and for most buyers, it will be essential to protect that investment.

Before you buy, be sure to read the brand’s warranty information, as many lifetime warranties only cover certain parts of the grill, while other components have much more limited terms.

Suppose you’re considering buying a used kamado grill. In that case, you may want to reconsider that decision, as some of the better brands will only honor the manufacturer’s warranty to the original owner.

Price

This is a category where price usually determines materials, artistry, and size. With so many options on the market, the cost of a kamado can vary considerably, with smaller steel models starting at around $300 and high-end “designer” kamados costing almost $10,000.

For the most part, barbecue enthusiasts should expect to spend anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 on a large ceramic kamado grill with enough accessories to start cooking. That said, you can spend more or less depending on which brand you’re buying and what accessories you’re buying for it.

What is so great about a kamado grill?

Kamado grills get up to temperature quickly and it is easy to maintain a steady temperature. Many accessories are available for the Big Green Egg, so cooking is more enjoyable and easy and the result is great tasting food! Quality of Product: Kamado grills are designed to last for a very long time.

Is Kamado Joe cheaper than Big Green Egg?

There is not much of a price difference between the two brands when looking at the Big Green Egg big sizes. You may spend more in the long run on a Big Green Egg to get the cooking options you want the most.

How long do kamado grills last?

Heat Point: Kamados can maintain consistent temperatures up to 700 degrees F. Your typical backyard gas grill only reaches the 500 F range, making it more difficult to get that perfect sear for your steaks. Quality: Gas grills last maybe 10 years, if you’re lucky. Kamado grills, however, last a lifetime.
