Advantages of saltwater and freshwater pools

Do you want to know the advantages of freshwater and saltwater pools? The fundamental thing to opt for one option is to look at the water disinfection system: chemical chlorine or sodium chloride. Keep reading so you don’t miss any details!

Advantages of saltwater pools

  • Very simple operation.
  • It can be adapted to any pool.
  • Does not produce odors.
  • The sensation when bathing is better than one with chlorine. The dreaded stinging in the eyes is over!
  • The water quality is much better since the water is softer and does not irritate the eyes or the skin.
  • Reduction of the use of chemical substances.

  • The cost of putting a saltwater pool can be approximately €15,000-25,000. The costs are so high since the treatment plant has a much higher price than freshwater pools.
  • The price of putting a freshwater pool can be approximately €5,000-10,000.

Which is better, a saltwater pool or a freshwater pool?

The answer to what kind of pool can have multiple answers. Opting for one option or another is a very personal matter and depends on the use that will be given to the pool.

However, Wollywe recommends, as long as the budget allows it, toinstallorbuild a saltwater pool since it is less harmful to the skin and the eyes as it contains fewer chemicals. Although its price is slightly higher, the quality is much better as it contains fewer chemicals.

We have already told you about both types of pools’ maintenance, cost, and advantages. It is time to decide if you prefer a salt or freshwater pool!

Your salt pool requires less maintenance than a chlorine pool. However, it is a question of respecting certain rules. Guide-Piscine explains how the treatment of a salt pool works, its advantages, how to dose the salt, how to control it, how to maintain the chlorinator, how to install it, what its price is and what the precautions are to take to prolong its life.

How to treat the water of a salt pool?

Why choose a salt chlorinator for your swimming pool?

Still little used in France, the electrolyzer nevertheless has many advantages  :

  • it is economical
  • it is ecological
  • it is compatible with all swimming pools
  • it produces odorless natural chlorine that does not irritate the skin or mucous membranes, which does not cause allergies, and does not discolor swimwear.

Salt pool: how does it work?

The salt pool works on the principle of electrolysis. It is a titanium electrode polarized by a low voltage current that arises at the outlet of your pool filter and breaks down the salt in the water into natural chlorine and caustic soda.

A small quantity of chlorine is thus permanently released, which ensures the disinfection of the water while avoiding unpleasant odors and the time it takes to neutralize the pool following normal chlorination. It is, therefore, necessary to salt the water in the pool and maintain a certain concentration of salt.

Electrolysis is based on a perpetual cycle because the salt transformed into chlorine will then be transformed back into salt, and so on.

Natural chlorine or chemical chlorine?

With a salt chlorinator, the salt is transformed into natural chlorine. Natural chlorine is as effective as chemical chlorine sold in stores. It has an oxidizing, disinfecting, antibacterial, and antifungal power. Once the chlorine has done its disinfection job, and under the effect of the sun’s rays, it recombines with the caustic soda to become salt again.

The chlorine produced by an electrolyzer is very pure, making it very effective for the daily treatment of your swimming pool water.

The elements of a salt water chlorinator for swimming pools

A chlorinator is made up of different elements to be able to function properly and produce sufficient chlorine to keep the water clean:

Composition of the swimming pool chlorinator

Features

The cell body – To be placed on the filtration circuit

– Easily removable to check the electrodes

The electrodes – In the form of plates or grids, depending on the type of electrolyzer

– In titanium and coated with a precious metal (ruthenium and iridium)

The electrical box – To regulate and distribute the active chlorine in your pool. Thanks to an alarm system, it signals any anomaly or breakdown of the electrolyzer.

Treatment of a swimming pool with salt: how to dose the salt?

During the first use, you will need to pour a certain quantity of salt into your pool so that the chlorinator can function correctly and produce a sufficient quantity of chlorine.

To find out the weight of salt to pour into your pool, refer to the instructions for your chlorinator. Depending on the model, you will need to add between 3 and 7 grams of salt per liter of water. You must also know the volume of water in your pond in cubic meters and then multiply this by the recommended salinity level. For example, if you have a 30 m³ swimming pool and an electrolyzer that recommends 5 g of salt per liter of water, you will need to pour 150 kg of special swimming pool salt into your pool.

Then check twice a year if the salt level has not changed. If you notice any problems (such as water turning green or algae appearing on the walls and walls), check the salt level and take the necessary measures.

Good to know that a salt pool does not mean a seawater pool! The salt content of your swimming pool is ten times lower than that of seawater. Moreover, the annoying effects of seawater (itching, drying of the skin) do not concern the salt pool.

Check the pH of your salt pool water.

Maintaining your salt pool also involves regular water analysis and pH monitoring, as caustic soda tends to increase the pH level. For this, you can use several pH testers, such as a pH meter or colorimetric testers. Pool water should have a neutral pH of around 7.4.

How to install a salt chlorinator?

A salt chlorinator can be installed on a new swimming pool or the hydraulic circuit of an already built swimming pool. For the connection of your salt chlorinator, it is strongly recommended to call on a professional or an approved technician.

This type of work is delicate and requires certain expertise. A poorly made connection would have harmful consequences for your swimming pool and the quality of the water in your pool.

How to maintain a saltwater chlorinator?

It is recommended to regularly clean the electrodes of your chlorinator to improve conductivity, slow down erosion and increase the production of natural chlorine. The ideal is to clean it about every six months. It is, in fact, a question of dismantling the electrodes and removing the limestone deposits. There are self-cleaning electrodes, but they nevertheless oxidize over time and eventually wear out.

Be aware that even if you properly maintain your chlorinator, you will need to change the electrodes approximately every four years.

With salt electrolysis, there are no chemicals to handle: all you have to do is acquire a landing net for surface impurities, possibly a pool broom to clean the bottom, and a winter cover to protect your swimming pool in the low season!

Maintenance of a swimming pool chlorinator: precautions to take

The water temperature is an important factor in properly filtering your salt pool. Too cold water (below 16°C) will damage the electrodes. In winter, it is therefore strongly advised to stop your chlorinator. If you want to use it all year round, you must install a pool heater to keep the water at the right temperature.

Price of a salt water chlorinator for swimming pools

Depending on the options, there are different types of chlorinators at prices ranging from 600€ to more than 2000€. Salt, on the other hand, is relatively inexpensive, saving Money on maintaining your pool.

However, the electrodes must be changed every 3 or 4 years because they tend to erode and oxidize. Count between 200 and 1000 euros for an electrolysis cell.
