FORBIDDEN TO GO TO THE FOREST

There’s no doubt you can’t go into the woods with an ax to chop down your own Christmas tree, it’s illegal, and you could be prosecuted for theft, but also other offenses like trespassing, vandalism, breach of tranquility… This would ruin all the charm of this marvelous moment so long-awaited each year. Remember that forests belong to private owners and treat them as such.

FIND A TREE NEAR YOU

No need to give up the magic of Christmas; you can cut your Christmas tree and install it in your home, thanks to the fir trees in the country. Find out if any of them are near you. Most of the time, you will find that making an appointment is unnecessary. You can come with your tools during opening hours. With a little imagination, you’ll feel like a real lumberjack in a forest of fir trees!

10 Tips for Cutting Your Own Christmas Tree 2022

WHY CUT YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE: FOR A WIDER CHOICE

Every year, it’s the same thing: you have to think about the Christmas tree. Do you want it big in your hallway? Or smaller to brighten up a bay window? Or are you picky about its fleshy look? When you wander through the usual stores, finding the tree that meets your criteria is often difficult, so you have to compromise or go home empty-handed. Here is a solution to your worries: what if you cut your Christmas tree yourself? In a fir forest, the choice is vast, and you can take the time necessary to choose the tree that suits you.

STIHL advice: To avoid unpleasant surprises, measure the opening of your tree stands before going to the tree stand. Bring a tape measure to measure the trunk at the fir plantation, so you can be sure that your Christmas tree will fit.

BETTER PRESERVED TREES AND FEWER NEEDLES ON THE GROUND

Have you ever noticed that your tree loses its needles before Christmas Day? Often the fir trees have been stored and cut too long before being sold, thus losing their needles prematurely. You won’t have any unpleasant surprises by cutting your own Christmas tree.

A WONDERFUL EXCURSION

Christmas is a special time for families; choosing and cutting your Christmas tree together is part of the magic of Christmas. Whether it is to walk the paths of the fir forest to find the tree that suits you, cut it, or bring it home, live this Christmas experience together and make this moment unforgettable.

Make Christmas a joyful holiday above all else, and take note of our safety tips when trimming your own Christmas tree.

BETTER VALUE FOR MONEY

Because wonderful Christmas memories are priceless, finding the perfect Christmas tree at a lower cost is possible. If you cut your Christmas tree by yourself, the price-performance ratio is much better. Like other Christmas tree dealers, sapinières set a price according to the size and variety of the tree (firs are generally more expensive than spruces). Still, you will find that the one you cut yourself is more fragrant and fresher than those that have been long in advance. In addition, fir trees generally give a discount on fir trees cut on-site by customers.

HOW TO CUT YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

HOW TO CUT YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

  • Before cutting your own Christmas tree, shake it vigorously to dislodge the snow and any needles ready to fall.
  • Never do it alone; you will need help to hold the trunk at the level of the upper third to stabilize it.
  • The chainsaw guide bar or ax blade should be angled downward during your cut.
  • Once the tree is cut and on the ground, cut the trunk’s base again, so it fits well on your support.

STIHL tip: If you can, immerse your tree stand in water and add a spoonful of sugar to the water, your cut Christmas tree will retain its freshness longer.

CUTTING YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE: SOME SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Alone or with others, cutting down your Christmas tree is a source of pleasure and satisfaction, but safety remains paramount. When working with a chainsaw, wear cut-resistant pants, safety shoes, work gloves, and goggles to protect yourself from flying wood chips. With a battery-powered chainsaw, hearing protection is not required.

When you cut a Christmas tree, the people accompanying you must keep their distance. It is important to cut your tree during the day in daylight because the risk of injury increases considerably at nightfall.

IN SUMMARY: CUTTING YOUR OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

  • Cut down your Christmas tree only in an authorized place.
  • The ideal tool for cutting your own Christmas tree is to use a battery-powered chainsaw. Check with the sapinière if this tool is authorized.
  • Never cut your tree without being accompanied; the second person must hold the trunk.
  • When cutting your own Christmas tree, the chainsaw guide bar or ax should be angled towards the ground.
  • Cut your Christmas tree only in daylight; the risk of injury increases after dark.

How to choose and cut your Christmas tree?

As the holiday season is upon us, there will come a time when you will have to make your choice of Christmas tree. Are you going to opt for an artificial or natural tree? If you opt to cut down your tree, do you know how to keep it looking great longer? Let us guide you through all these questions.

Synthetic or natural Christmas tree?

At Émondage Sud-Ouest, we have the environmental cause at heart. That’s why we recommend picking your own for your next Christmas.

Does it surprise you? Indeed, suppose this question has been debated for a long time. In that case, the latest research (including that carried out by the David Suzuki Foundation) proves that the natural tree would be the best option for the environment.

Here are some advantages of natural fir versus synthetic fir:

1- Encourage local farmers;

2- Its carbon index is significantly lower than synthetic fir;

3- The trees are biodegradable, unlike the artificial tree;

4- It is possible to get respectfully rid of your tree according to the standards put in place by the government;

5- They are not made of petroleum, PVC, or lead like the artificial ones;

6- They require less transport, from felling to sale, compared to synthetic trees.

How do I cut my tree?

Ideally, the trunk should be cut before putting it on its support. This keeps it fresher and increases its lifespan.

While not all places will allow you to cut yourself, you can still ensure that the trunk is not V-sawn or angled, so it is more stable and prevents falling.

If you buy a tree that has already been cut, you can cut a thin layer of 2 cm at the end of the trunk. Indeed, when the tree is cut, it will produce a thick sap where the cut will have been made. It is a defense mechanism. This thick sap can block sap flow through the trunk and needles and cause your tree to die faster. Making a fresh new incision before putting it on your bracket will prevent such a blockage.

Some beliefs also propose to cut holes in the trunk of your tree. Know that this is a myth and that this technique is not recommended to extend its life.

You are ready to cut down your tree.

While your choice remains personal, we recommend you opt for natural fir this year. Also, cut it appropriately to make it last as long as possible! Whether it’s pruning your trees or choosing your Christmas tree, Émondage Sud-Ouest is your tree expert!

Christmas is fast approaching, reminding us that we should soon buy a Christmas tree. And why not go and cut it yourself?

The advantage of choosing your natural tree is that you can buy one exactly as you want, in addition to being very fresh and smelling good! You can then be proud of having chosen the tree that will take pride of place during all the Holidays in the house.

Where to cut your Christmas tree?

Several sites in Quebec offer tree picking.

Rene Matte Plantation, Saint-Basile-de-Portneuf

This is the case, for example, of theRené Matte plantation, located in Saint-Basile-de-Portneuf. The latter is well aware that it is a family activity and will not fail to welcome you in the company of his elves!

Some sleds will be at your disposal to facilitate the transport of your tree. The elves will be there to help you select and cut it.

The plantation is open on weekends only, from November 27 to December 12.

Sapinière Saint-Jean, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome – Bôsapin

TeaSaint-Jean sapinière in Saint-Jean-Chrysostome, now called Bôsapin, is another place to go and choose a natural fir tree. From November 27 to December 12, Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4:30 pm, dozens of families go there and then leave with a pretty wrapped Christmas tree.

It is strongly recommended to reserve your place online to access the parking lot.

Warning: the presence of goblins is very likely!

Verger Champetre, Granby

In Granby in the Eastern Townships, there is the magnificent Verger Champêtre . More than just a plantation, this site is open year-round and offers various activities, including accommodation on the farm.

U-pick is possible from Thursday to Sunday, starting November 18.

  1. Bernier Plantation, the town of Brome Lake

Located near Bromont, the Bernier plantation is open seven days a week, from 8 am to 5 pm until December 23.

*Note: For the 2021 season, picking your own at the Bernier plantation will not be possible. However, it will be possible to come and buy a pre-cut tree.

JLS Plantation, Sainte-Angèle-de-Monnoir

The JLS plantation is open from November 19 to December 19. Check their Facebook page for the detailed schedule.

Tips for choosing the right tree

Take the right size.

Before leaving to choose your natural tree, take the measurements of your living room. A tree that is too big could touch the ceiling, and a tree that is too small would seem to get lost in the room… It is therefore important to find the right size so that the conifer fits as harmoniously as possible into your home. Remember that this one will stay there for several days or weeks!

Also, consider the span of the tree; it’s not just height that matters. If the tree is too wide, it could take up too much space in the living room.

Smell his tree

Do not hesitate to smell the tree because some are more fragrant than others! This can be a selection criterion. The smell of fir is very pleasant for many people, but it can also become bothersome if it is too strong.

Think about the support for the tree

You can use a log or a pot filled with moist sand, which keeps it fresh even longer.

To buy

Watch out for the heat!

Avoid direct heat sources. It is not only important to do so so that the tree stays in good summer long, but also for an obvious safety issue.
